Nasal Reshaping (Rhinoplasty) Q & A
Are you dissatisfied with the shape of your nose?
Rhinoplasty, more commonly known as nasal surgery, is surgical procedure that reshapes the nose. It can change the proportion of your nose to match your other facial features, and thus enhance your appearance, giving you the look you desire. This surgery not only changes the shape of the nose, it can correct any deformations, bumps, or dents of the nose. It also can increase or decrease the size of the nose, change the angle of the nose in relation to the upper lip, or modify the nasal tip in many different ways. Rhinoplasty can be combined with septoplasty. This surgery can improve some breathing problems caused by abnormalities of the nasal septum.
Rhinoplasty is performed to improve the overall appearance of the nose. Patients seek rhinoplasty to correct aesthetic defects that, when corrected, provide balance and harmony to their facial features. The result of nasal surgery can be seen almost immediately, although swelling often does not fully resolve for up to 1 year. *Patients are able to return to work 1 week after nasal surgery.
What can surgery of the nose accomplish? It can change:
- The size of the nose, so that it fits in well with your other facial structures
- The width of the nose at the bridge
- The profile of the nose, fixing any bumps or indentations on the bridge
- The tip of the nose, if it is too large, round, droopy, or upturned
- Nostrils that may be too large, wide, uneven, or upturned
- The unevenness or lopsidedness of the nose
- Nasal septal deviation
You would be an ideal patient for rhinoplasty if:
- Your facial growth is complete
- You are physically healthy
- You have specific, but realistic goals in mind for the enhancement of your appearance
What to expect?
Rhinoplasty surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and only takes a few hours. The patient will be given local or general anesthesia. First, Dr. Mirabile and Dr. Hsu will make incisions on the inside of the nose to access the bones and cartilage that provide support for the nose. Since these incisions are inside of the nose, the scars will not be visible. Often, an incision is required across the columella of the nose. This incision rarely leaves any visible scarring. Depending on your specific situation and desired results, Dr. Mirabile and Dr. Hsu may remove some bone or cartilage from your nasal skeleton, and tissue may be taken from one part of the nose and added to another. The nasal bone and cartilage will be repositioned and reshaped to achieve your desired nasal profile. The skin and tissue will then be redraped over the newly sculpted skeleton of the nose. After surgery, a splint will be placed on the nose to support the structures as they heal. To provide further support, nasal packing may also be placed inside of the nose.
*Recovery:
Dr. Mirabile and Dr. Hsu will inform you that the nasal packing can be removed 1-2 days after your surgery and that the splint may be removed 1 week after surgery. For the days following surgery, it is essential to keep the head elevated and avoid bending over. Patients should also avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities. Most patients can return to work or school within 7-10 days following surgery.
After surgery, nasal breathing may feel temporarily limited. This is due to swelling inside of the nose. Once the swelling goes down, the breathing will improve. It is normal for your face to feel puffy or swollen the first day after surgery. Some patients also experience bruising around the eyes. This will subside within 7-10 days after surgery. Cold compresses can help reduce the amount of bruising that occurs and ease any discomfort.
