Liposuction Q & A

Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States. It involves the removal of the fatty deposits from “trouble areas” such as s the thighs, abdomen, back, neck, hips, buttocks and the upper arms. This procedure can even be used to shape the calves and trim above the knees and contour the ankles depending on each patient’s desires. Localized accumulations of excess fatty and breast tissue in teens or adult males, also called gynecomastia, can often be treated by liposuction as well.

Liposuction reshapes and trims focal areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits. This can improve your body’s curves and proportion ultimately enhancing your self-image. Even though you may have good health and exercise regularly, some people still have unwanted localized fatty areas or a body shape with disproportionate contours that just don’t seem to change with exercise. If this is your case, liposuction might be a good option for you.

Dr. Mirabile and Dr. Hsu are able to use liposuction to remove fat from your “trouble” areas through very small skin incisions. This makes liposuction an attractive alternative to more invasive surgical procedures for patients. Unwanted areas of fat can be removed easily, allowing a rapid recovery. The procedure is often combined with other cosmetic surgeries, such as tummy tuck. Most patients return to work within 3-5 days.

Liposuction removes fat deposits located between the skin and muscle through very small incisions using a narrow metal tube or cannula connected to a suction machine. Discreet incisions are made that are either hidden in the patient’s natural skin folds or in an inconspicuous place. The liposuction procedure is ideally suited to patients with localized areas of excess fat which can be sculpted to produce a more pleasing, overall shape.

Methods

Before your liposuction procedure, Dr. Mirabile and Dr. Hsu mark circles and lines on the areas of your body that you both have decided to be treated. Photos and measurements are also taken and kept in your file so that before and after images can be compared.

How your liposuction procedure is done depends on the specific technique that is used. Dr. Mirabile and Dr. Hsu will review these techniques with you, and recommend the optimal treatment for you.

Tumescent Liposuction:

This is the most common type of liposuction. Dr. Mirabile and Dr. Hsu inject a sterile solution — a mixture of saline, an anesthetic (lidocaine) to relieve pain, and a drug that causes the blood vessels to constrict (epinephrine) into the area that is being treated. This fluid mixture is absorbed by the fat cells and causes the area to swell and become firm. Dr. Mirabile and Dr. Hsu then make small cuts into your skin and insert a thin instrument called a cannula under your skin. The cannula is connected to a vacuum that suctions fat and fluids from your body. Placement of the tumescent fluid allows the area to be treated more completely and facilitates a smoother final result.

Power Assisted Liposuction:

This method utilizes a cannula that moves in a rapid back-and-forth, oscillating motion to facilitate the breakup and removal of fat. Power-assisted liposuction may sometimes cause less pain and swelling, often allowing Dr. Mirabile and Dr. Hsu to remove fat with more precision and less trauma.

Vaser Lipo:

This advanced procedure can be used after tumescent fluid is placed. Vaser Lipo utilizes ultrasound energy to melt fat cells while preserving the surrounding tissues to promote smooth results and rapid healing. Often, we see skin tightening after Vaser Lipo, due to the effects of ultrasound energy on the deep layer of the skin. This often leads to a better post-treatment contour of the skin. Patients often are able to have the procedure and return to work within one week.

Recovery

After your surgery, Dr. Mirabile and Dr. Hsu may prescribe medication to help control any pain or discomfort, and antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection. You will also be asked to wear a compression garment for approximately three weeks. During this time, expect some contour irregularities as the swelling decreases. After this period of time, most swelling and bruising has resolved and approximately 60%-70% of the result is evident. *It will take approximately 3-6 months to see the final result.
