What to Expect During and After Electrolysis

What to Expect During and After Electrolysis

Removing unwanted body hair is an age-old problem, but it’s one we tackle with cutting-edge technology. Here at Best Impression Med SpaRobert Mirabile, MD, and Dr. Vivian Hsu provide several hair removal options, including laser removal and electrolysis.

Here, we zero in on electrolysis and explain what it is, how it works, and what you can expect during and after your session.

What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the scientific process of passing an electric current through a substance. In terms of hair removal, electrolysis removes unwanted body hair by passing an electric current (via a fine probe that is inserted into each hair follicle) to damage your hair’s ability to grow.

If your hair follicles can’t produce new hair, you benefit from permanent smooth, hair-free skin.

Unlike laser hair removal (which works best with dark hair and light skin), electrolysis can destroy a follicle’s ability to produce hair even if the follicle produces white, red, or dark-colored hair.

What to expect during electrolysis

Here at Best Impression Med Spa, we perform electrolysis using the blend method. This process combines two types of electric currents δΈ€ galvanic and thermolysis currents. A specialized air pump helps to desensitize your skin with computer-controlled streams of air.

Before we get started, we apply a topical numbing cream to keep you comfortable. During the session, a thin probe is inserted into your hair follicle.

The probe delivers a small electric current to the hair follicle. Some people describe the sensation as hot, while others may describe it as a pinch. We repeat the process for each hair follicle.

Depending on the treatment area, your session may last 15-60 minutes.

What to expect after electrolysis

After your session, it’s important to avoid any activity that irritates your hair follicles. This includes:

The most common side effects after an electrolysis session are slight redness, tenderness, and swelling. These are all temporary side effects. Don’t apply anything to your skin unless specifically instructed to do so.

Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved treatment that permanently removes unwanted hair, but you can expect to need several sessions. That’s because electrolysis must target your hair during a specific part of your hair's natural growth cycle.

Benefits of electrolysis

There’s no shortage of hair removal options, but electrolysis offers many benefits, including:
